Cases of Andes (Hantavirus) Virus have been reported in the region.
The risk for most travelers is extremely low; the United States is working with international partners to investigate and prevent further viral spread. Review the CDC for more information on hantavirus.
To prevent exposure to Andes (hantavirus), travelers should:
- Avoid areas where rodents will likely be found or where there are signs of their presence (e.g., droppings/nests). If not possible, wear a respirator.
- Wash hands often.
- Avoid contact with people who have symptoms like fatigue, fever, muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, chills, and/or abdominal pains/problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea).
- Store food and trash in receptacles with tight fitting lids.
- Take special precautions when cleaning/disinfecting areas contaminated by rodent droppings.
- Seek medical care and avoid exposure to other people if you experience the symptoms above. Call ahead, share your travel history, and wear a respirator or well-fitting mask when visiting the healthcare facility. Symptoms can progress rapidly.
