Boeing Resumes 777-9 ETOPS Testing as Certification Campaign Enters Final Phase
After years of delays and an exhaustive certification programme, Boeing has entered one of the final and most significant stages in the development of the 777-9. The manufacturer has resumed Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards (ETOPS) testing, marking another important milestone on the long road towards certification and entry into commercial service.
The latest phase follows the addition of a seventh flight-test aircraft to the 777-9 programme, which will focus on function and reliability trials as well as ETOPS certification flights. Boeing says the expanded test fleet will help complete the remaining certification work ahead of the aircraft’s planned first deliveries in 2027.
Why ETOPS Testing Matters
For any long-haul twin-engine aircraft, ETOPS approval is one of the final hurdles before airlines can fully exploit the aircraft’s capabilities.
ETOPS certification demonstrates that an aircraft can safely continue flying for an extended period following the failure of one engine, allowing airlines to operate routes far from diversion airports across oceans, deserts and polar regions.
For the Boeing 777-9, this is particularly important. The aircraft has been designed to serve some of the world’s longest routes, replacing ageing Boeing 777-300ERs and complementing fleets of Airbus A350s. Without ETOPS approval, airlines would face significant restrictions on route planning.
The certification programme involves hundreds of hours of operational testing, including long-duration flights, systems reliability demonstrations and real-world airline-style operations designed to prove the aircraft’s maturity before passengers ever step onboard.

Years of Testing Nearing the Finish Line
The 777-9 first flew in January 2020, but its development has been repeatedly delayed by technical issues, increased regulatory scrutiny and the temporary grounding of the test fleet following the discovery of structural issues within engine thrust link components in 2024.
Since then, Boeing has resumed certification flying, incorporating modifications and additional inspections required by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The programme has now accumulated around 4,800 flight-test hours, making it one of the most extensively tested aircraft Boeing has ever developed.
Boeing Chief Executive Kelly Ortberg has previously indicated that while the majority of certification flying is expected to conclude during 2026, ETOPS testing will continue into 2027 before final approvals are completed.
The Final Push Towards Certification
With seven aircraft now participating in the flight-test campaign, Boeing’s focus has shifted away from proving the aircraft’s basic performance and towards demonstrating operational reliability under airline conditions.
Function and reliability testing effectively allows the aircraft to operate as though it were already in commercial service, exposing it to normal airline schedules, airport turnarounds and extended flying designed to identify any remaining issues before certification.
Once ETOPS approval is achieved, Boeing will be in a position to begin customer deliveries, assuming the FAA grants the aircraft its long-awaited type certificate.

Lufthansa Set to Become First Operator
Despite Emirates being the programme’s largest customer, Lufthansa is expected to become the world’s first airline to place the Boeing 777-9 into commercial service.
The German carrier’s first production aircraft has already completed its maiden flight and features Lufthansa’s fully installed passenger cabin rather than a flight-test interior, allowing Boeing to validate cabin systems as part of the certification process.
Current expectations point towards the first customer delivery during 2027, with Lufthansa planning to introduce the aircraft on long-haul routes once certification is complete. Emirates is expected to follow shortly afterwards, although it has indicated that some earlier-built aircraft may require substantial modification before they are accepted into service.
A Critical Aircraft for Boeing’s Recovery
The Boeing 777-9 represents far more than another widebody aircraft.
As Boeing’s largest twin-engine airliner, it promises around 20% lower fuel burn and emissions than the aircraft it replaces while offering greater passenger capacity, a wider cabin and the new GE9X engines.
Just as importantly, the programme has become symbolic of Boeing’s efforts to rebuild confidence following years of certification delays and increased regulatory oversight.
With ETOPS testing now underway and certification entering its final stages, the world’s largest twin-engine passenger aircraft is finally beginning to look much closer to joining airline fleets.
If Boeing can maintain its current schedule, 2027 should finally see the 777-9 enter commercial service—almost seven years later than originally planned, but carrying with it one of the most thoroughly tested certification programmes in the company’s history.
