Video: IATA’s Walsh on what’s shaping maintenance and engineering today
The global aviation maintenance and engineering sector is facing an increasingly complex operating environment, with supply chain disruption, ageing fleets and engine reliability issues continuing to place heavy pressure on operators and MRO providers.
Ahead of the World Maintenance & Engineering Symposium (WMES) taking place in Madrid on June 24-25, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Willie Walsh, has outlined the key challenges shaping today’s maintenance landscape in a new video message.
Walsh identifies five major pressures the industry must continue to navigate, including ongoing supply chain instability, engine maintenance bottlenecks, aircraft delivery delays, rising maintenance demand and costs, and geopolitical tensions impacting materials availability and operational capacity.
The comments reflect growing concern across the aviation aftermarket as airlines continue operating older aircraft longer than planned due to delayed new aircraft deliveries and constrained engine shop capacity.
In the video, Walsh also highlights the broader industry trends expected to dominate discussion at this year’s WMES event, where airlines, OEMs, MRO providers and suppliers will gather to explore practical strategies for improving resilience, reliability and operational performance.
The symposium programme will focus heavily on how the industry can work collaboratively to address persistent maintenance and supply chain challenges while supporting long-term fleet growth.
Walsh is expected to attend the event alongside senior representatives from across the global aviation maintenance sector.
For maintenance and engineering leaders dealing daily with reliability pressures, cost escalation and constrained capacity, WMES is set to provide a timely platform for discussion and shared problem-solving.
